Morimune in the Muromachi period
Morimune KOYANAGAWA (years of birth and death unknown) was a historic figure in the Muromachi period. He was the progenitor of the Koyanagawa clan in Mutsu Province. He was the son of Mochimune DATE. He was Nakatsukasa no Taifu. He was the father of Chikatomo and Munetomo KOYANAGAWA.
He set up a branch family in Koyanagawa, Date-gun to establish the Koyanagawa clan. Morimune described below was his great-grandson.
Morimune in the Sengoku Period
Morimune KOYANAGAWA (1523 - February 22, 1595) was a historic figure in the Sengoku period (of Japan). He was lord of the Koyanagawa clan in Mutsu Province. He was a retainer of the Date clan. He was Harumune DATE's adopted son-in-law. He was the son of Chikamune KOYANAGAWA (Owari no Kami). He was the father of Muneshige KOYANAGAWA. He was Nakatsukasa no Taifu. He was descended from Chikatomo KOYANAGAWA and Munemori mentioned above was his great-grandfather.
Having been a retainer of the Date clan since the time of Harumune DATE, he was given Takahata Castle in Okitama-gun, Dewa Province. He was a wise and courageous man. He achieved military success in combat with Minbu SATOMI who was a busho (military commander) of the Mogami clan and with Sadatsuna OUCHI. In 1570, however, he aroused Terumune's anger when he failed to capture Munetoki NAKANO who escaped. He retired from active duties on account of old age when Terumune DATE died in 1585. He had since given advice to Masamune DATE as the latter's close associate. In his later years he was known as Deibansai. On February 22, 1595 he died in Kyoto. He was 73 years old.
